What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

A lymphatic drainage massage is a more gentle massage that aims to encourage movement of lymph fluids around the body. The lymph carries waste products away from tissues and returns them back towards the heart. There are certain health conditions that cause the fluid in the lymph to build up over time, and so this massage helps to remove it again. People who have lymphedema and fibromyalgia have this massage to reduce the fluid in the lymph.

What Will Happen During a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

A lymphatic drainage massage is much more gentle than a deep tissue massage. It lasts between 30 and 34 minutes, and involves more stretching than a traditional Swedish massage. Gentle pressure is used here with light movements in a sequence and the masseur will use a variety of techniques like stretching, compressing and cupping. This will help to stimulate the lymphatic area without the need to apply too much pressure. The fluid will then move easily through tissues and will not get trapped anywhere in the body.

What Should I Wear To a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Generally the same advice is given to those attending lymphatic drainage massages, but there are some additional suggestions to other massages. For these sessions, therapists recommend that you wear a v-neck t-shirt so your neck and collar bones can be accessed more easily. It's also advised that you attend your appointment on an empty stomach, or just have something small and light before your session. Lighter and looser clothing is generally better, but don't panic if you turn up in jeans!

Benefits of a Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage massages have some great health benefits. By removing the toxins from muscle tissues, you're cleansing them and pushing the liquid to go back to where it belongs. For those who have lymphedema, the massage is used to relieve painful swelling in arms, legs and other joints. It also helps people who suffer with bloating, and is suggested to aid in weight loss too!

How Often Should You Get A Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

For the treatment to work effectively and its effects to last, it's recommended that you get the massage every 3 months! It's best to talk to a masseur about how many sessions you might initially need, and then after those sessions you can review how the treatment has been going.

What Happens After a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

The waste products will start coming out with increased levels of urination. You won't feel too sore after the massage as they use very light pressure. Your limbs will feel light, you'll feel relaxed and should have more energy too! Basically, you'll feel great!
