What Is Balayage?

Balayage is actually French and literally means 'to sweep', which refers to the way that the colour is applied to the hair. It is a type of hair colour technique where highlights are hand painted or swept directly onto random sections of the client's hair, and doesn't use foil! The idea is to create a more natural and graduated highlight effect on the hair. By hand painting the highlights on, you can get more brightness and contrast throughout the hair, and just like the older version of highlights, there's still plenty of colours to choose from!

Why Is Balayage So Popular?

Balayage is incredibly popular for many reasons, and we'll mention just a few for you! It is a much more natural and healthier way to effectively dye your hair and create those highlights that you long for! Thanks to the way the dye grows out of the hair, you're not left with any noticeable regrowth or roots. Another reason people choose this treatment is the fact that they are able to completely customise the colour of the highlights, so can choose whether they want a bold or a subtle look!

Benefits Of Balayage

Balayage has many great benefits, and we've mentioned a couple of them already, but check out these other great benefits the treatment offers:

  • It's healthier for your hair, leaving your hair soft and silky.
  • Your hair will have a more natural look with your customised colour choice!
  • You can blend your old highlights that you're growing out with your new ones thanks to balayage.
  • It's perfect for all hair types from short to long and straight to curly!
  • It will make your hair look thicker and fuller, due to the highlights being hand painted, your stylist can choose where they go.

What's The Difference Between Balayage & Ombre?

Ombre is a more dramatic two tone colour effect, where you can see a visible contrast. The hair is typically darker on the top and lighter as you get to the bottom of the hair. As we know with balayage, it's a more natural technique of sweeping the hair with the colour to create a more natural version of highlights in the hair, and tends to have less of a visible contrast than ombre does!
