What is an Indian Head Massage?

An Indian head massage is also known as Champissage. During this treatment, your upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face are massaged. These are acupressure points and are targeted to relax you as well as improve the condition of your hair and your scalp! The treatment is an ancient practice that has been used in India for more than 2,000 years. It aims to promote long life and balance energies within the body. Initially, the Indian head massage was performed at weddings and births, but the massage is actually still given to babies today to promote good health!

What Happens During an Indian Head Massage?

Your therapist will start the treatment by working your shoulders, as there is usually a lot of built up tension in this area. They will move from your shoulders down to your upper back, and up and down your neck to remove any tension you hold here. Your treatment will come to an end with your scalp being massaged, and your therapist will target the acupressure points here. They may also use oils during your treatment, which promotes growth for your hair and healthy skin. A range of techniques will be administered during your treatment including deep kneading and compression movements, and they will gently stimulate pressure points on your face also.

What Should I Wear to an Indian Head Massage?

Generally, you can wear what you want to an Indian head massage as it's not a full body type of treatment. We usually recommend for most types of massages to wear looser fitting clothing, and we would suggest the same for your Indian head massage. Looser clothing will help you to feel more relaxed, comfortable and not restricted. You won't be required to undress for this massage, so if you would feel more comfortable in tighter clothing like jeans, then that's no problem!

Benefits of an Indian Head Massage

Indian head massages promote some excellent benefits for your health including encouraging hair growth and health through expanding oxygen in your hair follicles. The treatment also helps to prevent headaches and migraines by releasing built up tensions in your head and neck, promotes a better sleeping pattern by decreasing your stress levels, and through the state of relaxation, symptoms of anxiety and depression are reduced.

What Happens After an Indian Head Massage?

It is recommended that after you receive your Indian head massage treatment you avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol, strenuous activity, driving for long periods of time, heavy meals and shampooing your hair for the next twenty four hours so you experience the full benefits of the treatment. To remove the oils that were used, massage shampoo into dry hair then wash it off. Use the remainder of your day to rest and make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. It's also not unusual to experience side effects including muscle soreness and tiredness. These reactions are completely normal, but if you do have any questions, make sure to speak to your therapist and they can put your mind as well as your body at rest!

How Often Should You Have an Indian Head Massage?

How often you have an Indian head massage is mostly down to you. It might be a good idea to think about why you're receiving this treatment. For example, if you're having this type of massage to relax and calm you then every 4 or 6 weeks would be fine, but you can have it more frequently if you feel you would benefit from it. If you're having the treatment to help aid pain or an injury, some therapists recommend having the massage once a week for up to 6 weeks and then reviewing how you're getting on!
