A hair toner is a product that helps you correct unwanted tones in your hair and generally personalise your overall colour. It is often used to add natural or more visible tones after initial colour treatments. As a result, it enhances the overall tonality of your hair, giving it a more 'natural' looking colour. The most commonly found toners are either blue or purple - these are typically applied to banish brassy yellow or orange tones found in blonde or orange base hair types. This can come from a variety of products - some products are marketed as true 'toners', but any product that adjusts the colour of your hair, including tinted shampoos and conditioners, demi-permanent colours and glosses, can all be considered hair toners too!

These are typically used post-dye process, simply to even out the tones of your hair after treatment, not change them. If you're looking for a big colour change, hair dye is typically the way to go. However, toners are great to refresh or balance your existing colour.

How Long Does Hair Toner Last?

In short, it depends on how often you wash your hair! Typically, hair toner tends to stay in your hair between 2 to 6 weeks before needing a touch up, provided you follow all the initial instructions and do not wash your hair following initial application. However, if you wash your hair every day, expect it to fade quickly. Once you notice that your tonal colour is disappearing, call your hairdresser to book a new appointment or grab a toning product for a quick at home fix.
