German Christmas Traditions - Food, Drinks & Gifts

It goes without saying that for a lot of us Christmas time holds many traditions to do with friends and family. Some decorate the tree together, go Christmas carolling or bake and decorate a gingerbread house with the kids. But did you know that Germany has many unique Christmas traditions? When it comes to food at Christmas time, Germans know how its done. For Christmas Dinner, they swap out their turkey for delicious duck, goose or rabbit, accompanied with German delicacies such as apple and sausage stuffing, red cabbage and potato dumplings. For sweets, expect moreish Stollen, which is considered one of the best Christmas pastries in the world and can be found at most markets during the festive period. Nibble on gingerbread (Lebkuchen), chocolate Santa's and other Christmas confectionaries. The countdown to Christmas is also a big tradition, with many homes displaying an advent wreath on the living room table, on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Another special tradition is St Nicholas Day (Sankt Nikolaus Tag) on December 5th, where children place a freshly polished pair of boots in front of their bedroom doors, in the hopes that St Nicholas will visit their house, bearing gifts and sweet treats!
