On the curve of north eastern France, hugged by the German border, Strasbourg is not always known to tourists as a holiday hotspot so admiring its whimsical charm is even more enjoyable knowing you won’t be herded like cattle. Home to the European Parliament, the council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights, it’s an almighty city with oodles of culture to discover. After fun-filled days of exploring, you’ll retire to a studio apartment at CERISE Strasbourg located near the tram station which will have you in the city centre within 10 minutes. Each room comes complete with a kitchenette, flat-screen TV and contemporary comforts.

Christmas Market

Strasbourg’s cobbled streets and hotchpotch homes are transformed with wreaths, ribbons, strands of twinkly lights and ornate decorations, as if the exposed beams and patterned windows weren’t charming enough. Place Kléber where you’ll find the imposing cathedral hosts the yearly 30-metre Christmas tree adorned with glass baubles, and the square is filled with nativity scenes and wooden stalls. Visit Alsace's Christmas Food Market, the Christmas Market at Place de la Cathédrale and their oldest market, Christkindelsmärik. Mulled white wine made from locally grown grapes, bredele; cinnamon biscuits, Mannele; sweet man-shaped brioche, and honey gingerbread are just a few of the festive delicacies you can look forward to whilst swaying to the Christmas carols that fill the air.

Area

Unbeknown to many, the region is one of Europe’s largest medieval quarters with creaking timber-framed houses in Grand Île and Petite France having survived hundreds of years. Spare some time to meander through the weaving walkways and admire the architecture - La Petite France being one of the most photogenic areas of the city. Soon enough you’ll find your way to the sandstone cathedral - once the tallest building in the world until 1874. Across from the European Parliament and the Court of Human Rights is Parc de l’Orangerie which once housed 140 orange trees. Nowadays only three remain alongside the park’s greenhouse - worthy of a spot on the agenda. Ponts Couverts, Barrage Vauban, Église Saint-Thomas, Musée Alsacien, Neustadt, Strasbourg’s Historical Museum and obviously the European Parliament are also recommended by The Crazy Tourist and we’d happen to agree.
