The walled, medieval town is home to a number of distinctive, must-see sights and attractions and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Le Palais des Papes, or The Papal Palace, is perhaps the most famous of all it has the world’s largest Gothic building and was built in the 14th century to accommodate the Papacy, fleeing from oppressive and corrupt Rome. The city’s ramparts, built around the same time, today house around 16,000 people.

The cathedral and the Pont d’Avignon, a stunning medieval stone bridge on the Rhone, are both also well worth seeing.
