Itinerary
-
Day 1
Arrive in Christchurch and check in to
The Classic Villa boutique hotel, located near the centre.
-
Day 2
Today you’ll journey to the remote and beautiful Mt Potts high country station, home of Mt Sunday. This peaceful mountain was transformed into Edoras, the capital city of the Rohan people in Lord of the Rings. This tour includes exciting 4WD adventure through several rivers, a Champagne picnic lunch, informative and entertaining commentary from local guides and spectacular scenery.
-
Day 3
Today you’ll drive down the Inland Scenic Route before starting a lazy climb into the arid interior of the island. It is in this semi-desert environment that you’ll find the steepest mountains in the world where several of the snow shots were filmed for The Fellowship of the Ring. A short drive away is the location for Gondor, the White Mountains and the Entwash, where eight scenes from the Return of the King were filmed. Continue your drive south to the beautiful mountain lake resort of Wanaka, where you’ll find Barliman’s - New Zealand’s only Hobbit style accommodation. You’ll stay for two nights at
Minaret Lodge, a 5* lodge close to the lake and set in two acres of parkland.
-
Day 4
Today you’ll experience the ever-changing Matukituki River, fed by glaciers and surrounded by the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park. Follow the fast-flowing river through hobbit locations while your guide shares stories of how these ancient lands were carved by ice. Start with a 20-minute drive around the shores of Lake Wanaka to the Matukituki River where you’ll board the jet boat. First you’ll head downstream to Lake Wanaka for spectacular views including Mou Tapu Island before re-entering the Matukituki River to go upstream toward Mount Aspiring National Park. At the top of the River disembark for a 40-minute wilderness walk through native forest alongside a mountain stream to a waterfall.
-
Day 5
Today you’ll head to Te Anau and will stay at
Avon House B&B. The owner of this lovely establishment worked on the LOTR and offers guiding services to seldom visited and beautiful LOTR locations in the area.
-
Day 6
Today you’ll have the opportunity to visit the majestic Doubtful or Milford Sounds.
-
Day 7
Your B&B host will accompany you to Fangorn Forest and Nen Hithoel (Mavora Lakes), and you’ll then continue to Queenstown, where you’ll stay at
Queenstown House.
-
Day 8
During the day you’ll be whisked away for a Middle Earth experience, with tour highlights including NZ$15,000 worth of weapons and costume items for you to handle and photograph, lunch served in a restaurant with views over the stunning Remarkables mountain range, entertaining and knowledgeable guides and more.
-
Day 9
This morning you’ll take the Glenorchy Tour into the spectacular Mt Aspiring National Park. Amongst these towering peaks and bush clad slopes lie several locations from the LOTR trilogy. Then it’s time to return home!
