Built in 1815, the mill has been operating for over 200 years in its original location making it the oldest silk mill in the UK. You will receive a guidebook with your entry so you can learn all about the history of this Georgian water mill – from the children as young as eight working up to six and a half hours a day, to the history of ownership. In the height of business, the Whitchurch Silk Mill wove for Thomas Burberry, Thomas Wardle and Warners, and made fabric for legal gowns. During World War II silk was woven for insulating electrical cables and by the 1950s, an electric motor drove the machines through leather belts.
