The Mentalists is a comic two-hander, centered on the bizarre relationship between two middle-aged men, Ted and Morrie, who find themselves holed up in an extremely bland room at a Finsbury Park Hotel. While cooped up, the thin and twitchy Ted records a Utopian message to the world, where “lousy, selfish and anti-social behaviour” is punished. The delightfully camp and more relaxed Morrie meanwhile objects to Ted’s vision of a brave new world. As the pressure mounts, the strange couple are forced to confront the darker side of their relationship, as a moving and hilarious story of Utopian visions and friendship unravels. The award-winning Richard Bean wrote The Mentalists back in 2002, as part of the Transformation Season at the National Theatre. The BAFTA award-winning comedian Stephen Merchant makes his West End debut, playing alongside Gavin & Stacey’s Steffan Rhodri.
